Today, we have more orthodontic options than ever – from traditional metal brackets and wires to Invisalign®. Of course, lots of options mean lots of questions. When you come in for your child’s orthodontic treatment, you can rest assured knowing we will only recommend what is best for them and their smile.
Smiles of Dripping Springs offers the very best pediatric orthodontics in Dripping Springs, TX and beyond because our dentists have been straightening teeth and correcting bites for 25 years – and going!
Phased Orthodontic Treatment
Did you know that the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that all children get screened by an orthodontist by the time they reach their 7th birthday? This timeline allows orthodontists to identify potential problems sooner so that their growth path doesn’t infringe on the rest of their oral health.
Of course, if your child is older than 7 and has yet to receive an orthodontic consultation, there is still time to make an investment in your child’s future! We treat adolescents and teens of all ages, and we have plenty of options to ensure the great smile you are looking for.
When we begin treatment early we often do so in two phases. Phase I treatment begins as early as age 7, and can include preventive, interceptive, or modifying treatment. Our orthodontists may prescribe the following appliances to help remedy your child’s bite:
- Palatal expanders
- Spacers
- Retainers
Orthodontists can correct a number of early issues with alignment, jaw position, and gums in Phase I.
Phase II treatment occurs when the child is older, typically when their smile is ready for traditional braces, or even Invisalign, if they are a good fit for the system. This happens around the age of 12, taking advantage of children’s growth spurts to help reshape the bite and teeth positioning. This shortens overall treatment time and discomfort!
Traditional Braces For Kids
Remember those bulky, uncomfortable braces from high school? Much has changed in the world of orthodontics. These days, orthodontic treatment devices are designed with comfort in mind. From custom colors to slimmer fits, there’s no reason why your child should ever feel uncomfortable or embarrassed during treatment!
Orthodontic Aligners
Another orthodontic option is Invisalign®, an alternative to traditional braces that moves teeth into a more proper position using clear aligners. The trays are comfortable and removable, but they may not be the best treatment option for more complex cases.
Each tray is worn for about two weeks, and should only be removed to eat, brush, and floss. Invisalign® can work well for adults and teens alike, depending on the specifics of each case.
Teen Orthodontics
Does your “big kid” want a straighter smile before they head off to college? At Smiles of Dripping Springs, we offer teen orthodontics to help boost oral health and self-esteem. During your teen’s consultation, our team will conduct a thorough examination of your teen’s smile to determine which orthodontic system might fit their goals and lifestyle best. Depending on our findings, we may recommend traditional metal braces, discreet ceramic braces, or even Invisalign Teen clear aligners!
