Your Child’s First Dental Visit

At Smiles of Austin, we address kids’ dental and developmental needs to deliver the best care in the most comfortable and positive manner possible. It’s that simple! We know what works for children at every age and stage and we work closely with parents to develop a plan we all agree on. Together, we can help encourage a lifelong enthusiasm for oral care in your child, right from the start!

Your Child’s First Visit To The Dentist

Did you know that children should see the dentist once their first tooth comes in? For our youngest patients, we use a system called anticipatory guidance, a program designed to educate parents on what to expect for the first year of their child’s life, including the eruption of teeth, oral health care, and dietary advice. For the parents, its a time of education where we go over many “what to expects” as it will relate to your baby’s development.

During this very special – and fun! – appointment, our team will start with a toothbrush-cleaning to get your child used to the dentist. The kids are welcomed on their first magical adventure to “Tooth Town” and this sets the stage for trust and familiarity. This is usually done via a “lap exam” where your child will sit on your lap for the duration of the appointment. The idea is to get the kids comfortable with coming to the dentist, being introduced to our office, and making it a fun, positive first experience.

Of course, a trip to Smiles of Austin wouldn’t be complete without a whole lot of magical fun! In addition to all of the other engaging amenities that we offer, including TVs for kids to watch during the appointments, we also give away balloons to our youngest patients. It’s just another way the Smiles team does everything we can to make trips to the dentist as special as can be!
